- Obstetric emergency calls (OB) in the City of Charlottesville are infrequent among Emergency Medical Services’ (EMS) dispatch, giving EMS providers little exposure to out-of-hospital birth and few opportunities to improve their OB field skills. In contrast, midwives have regular exposure to home birth. The purpose of this participatory research paper is to examine trends in interprofessional training with simulation as a strategy for improving critical competencies; test the effects of a midwife-led, interprofessional training curriculum on EMS workers’ self-efficacy; and foster partnerships to execute and scale the training. Literature on interprofessional training with simulation was analyzed. Interviews, meetings, training manuals, and organization-wide surveys were assessed to measure EMS needs and certification standards. Follow-up surveys and interviews were evaluated after the training to measure outcomes. The literature revealed evidence that interprofessional training improves participants’ confidence and skills. Initial interviews and meetings with EMS employees found low-confidence in the effectiveness of current trainings and a desire for simulations. Self-assessment surveys (n=66) showed 83.4% (n=49) of respondents lacked confidence in their OB skills. A follow-up survey was completed by 28 participants with responses matched to their pre-survey results. 50% (n=14) had at least one level of improvement in confidence. Interprofessional training with simulation helps improve EMS crews’ OB skills, capacity to collaborate with midwives in the field, and confidence levels. More research is needed, but initial results are promising for scaling interprofessional training to further municipalities and supporting partnerships between EMS and home birth midwives.

- Background The following case example provides an overview of one innovative way to engage health professions faculty with health sciences librarians in the development of an interprofessional book discussion and identifies strategies to address implementation challenges. Academic health sciences librarians worked with the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Steering Committee to organize interprofessional book discussion groups for incoming health professions students. This inaugural book discussion brought together students and faculty of different disciplines to engage students in “learning from, with, and about” other professions. Case Presentation When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi, allowed involved discussions on important health sciences issues. The project included outreach, designing pre- and post-surveys, scheduling participants, and communicating with all participants before, during, and after the event. A total of seventy-nine students and thirty-six faculty, representing all health professions schools, participated in the small group IPE book discussions over two weeks. Conclusions Small group book discussions have been shown to be an effective tool to engage students and faculty in IPE. The results of the participant surveys were positive, and the IPE Steering Committee found value in including health sciences librarians throughout the process. Lessons learned from the pilot project include needing an efficient scheduling system, strongly communicating at all stages of the project, and starting the planning process months ahead of time. The IPE Steering Committee plans to conduct similar book discussions every fall semester moving forward and explore options for other IPE events.

- Objective: Educate nursing and dental hygiene (DH) students regarding oral considerations during cancer treatment; evaluate changes in knowledge, confidence, and willingness to provide oral screening, counseling, and referrals. Methods: Mixed-methods using baseline and post-intervention surveys and debriefing session including all first-year DH and accelerated nursing (ABSN) students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Results: 93 matched surveys returned (61 ABSN, 31 DH). Baseline surveys revealed 82% (n=76) indicated no knowledge to complete screenings, 68% (n=63) counseling, or 65% (n=60) referral; post-survey data indicated knowledge in screening (72%, n=67), counseling (81%, n=75) and referral (89%, n=83). Post-survey results showed confidence increases to screen (75%, n=70), counsel (83%, n=77), and refer (91%, n=82). Ninety- nine percent (n=92) agreed shared learning would foster development of a more effective team. Conclusion: Interprofessional education can increase knowledge, confidence, and willingness for screenings, counseling, and referrals for patients undergoing cancer therapies.

- With the nation’s changing demographics, the Office of Minority Health developed, in 2000, a set of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards to promote the provision of effective and equitable healthcare, and reduce health disparities. As current and future health care providers, both undergraduate and graduate nursing students are expected to be adept at providing culturally competent care. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to pilot an interprofessional health outreach project with the North Carolina Farmworkers Project (NCFWP) providing care to migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs), with a focus on the attitudes, skills and knowledge needed by nursing students to provide culturally-sensitive, patient-centered care, while also supporting the role of community health workers (CHWs) as part of the healthcare team. Nursing students (n=15) were recruited to volunteer at the NCFWP mobile health clinic for two shifts during the agricultural season. Thirteen students completed a pretest, posttest and reflection based on their experiences. The students (n=13) and providers (n=14) also completed evaluations at the end of the intervention, and a focus group was held for the CHWs (n=7). Though not statistically significant, there were improvements in students’ attitude and knowledge scores, and positive reflections. The providers evaluated the project and addition of nursing support in the mobile clinic positively. The CHWs were also satisfied with the addition of nursing support and viewed the project as a helpful addition in meeting the goals of the mobile clinic. The DNP project piloted a new prospect in partnering with a community organization in meeting the goal of providing culturally-sensitive, patient-centered quality care for all populations. Working with an interprofessional healthcare team allows for each discipline to bring in their expertise encompassing the holistic approach to patient care that is the goal of the transforming healthcare system. With support and resources, CHWs are indispensable in meeting the needs of vulnerable populations. The students’ experiences described through the reflections portray how this DNP project can have an impact on the student participants’ delivery of culturally-sensitive, patient-centered care in the future.

- Optimal decision-making by athletic trainers, grounded in best practices, is vital to optimize patient healthcare. However, many challenges exist within the athletic environment hindering consistency, efficacy, and/or effectiveness of concussion-related decision-making by athletic trainers. Therefore, the study purpose was to 1) understand factors impacting decision making, and 2) develop a novel intervention tool to prepare athletic training students for high-pressure situations which require the ability to make an appropriate medical decision to withhold an athlete from concussion-related symptoms. Improving athletic trainer preparation regarding making and implementing appropriate decisions can improve secondary concussion prevention and patient outcomes. This mixed-methodological study design incorporated formative research and intervention development/testing. Formative research was conducted via survey with certified athletic trainers (n=1029) and athletic training educators (n=55), and with surveys (n=840) and interviews (n=15) with athletic training students. The intervention was developed using the Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Education/Environmental Diagnosis and Evaluation (PRECEDE) planning model. This development incorporated preliminary data and formative research grounded in the Integrated Behavior Model. Several factors impacted concussion-related decision-making intentions by certified athletic trainers including quality of healthcare communication educational focus via perceived behavioral control (p=0.001) and communication/collaboration (p<0.001) on intentions despite pressure (p=0.001; p=0.044). For athletic training students, quality significantly affected self-efficacy (p=0.003) and intentions to make appropriate decisions despite pressure (p<0.001). From the educator perspective, quality and quantity of healthcare communication focus, and general attitudes were independent constructs with minimal differences within educational programs (general attitudes; z=2.16; p=0.03). Additionally, participants explained a large desire for greater focus on these topics despite positive findings. The designed intervention improved perceived behavioral control (p=0.027), self-efficacy (p=0.001), and intentions despite pressure (p=0.011), situation (p=0.003), and setting (p=0.012). These influential factors over decision-making may place athletes at further injury risk and negatively impact overall athlete health. Healthcare communication is not a mandated portion of athletic training curriculum but appears to have statistically and clinically significant effects on the intentions to make appropriate concussion-related decisions. As such, it is imperative that athletic training education programs prioritize content within this domain to adequately prepare student athletic trainers for these future decision-making responsibilities.

- Objective: The primary objectives are to implement the pharmacy consult program with sustainable pharmacy student involvement in the dental school clinic and to demonstrate an improvement in patient health behaviors. Design: This was a prospective pilot study with pre-post intervention evaluation performed at the UNC School of Dentistry clinic from August 2016 through May 2017. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were administered to collect the students’ demographics, knowledge and confidence of each discipline’s scope of practice, and perceptions of inter-professional communication and teamwork.Conclusions: Our prospective pilot program demonstrated the success of a pharmacy consult model in a dental clinic setting in improving inter-professional education. In general, DDS students reported a higher baseline level of pharmacy knowledge. While both DDS and DH students reported similar, high baseline RIPLS scores, confidence in pharmacy knowledge significantly increased in almost all areas surveyed in our study. Future directs include modifying the pharmacy consult model to incorporate student feedback and identified issues, as well as analyzing pharmacy student perspective data. Overall, we are encouraged to see increased collaboration between pharmacy and dental students.

- Objective: To identify factors that affect teamwork and communication skills development among interprofessional teams of health professional students in a simulation based course. Methods: 3 cohorts of 2-3 student teams completed 3-4 evaluated simulations. Interprofessional communication and teamwork skills were evaluated using a 16-question tool that awarded 0-2 points per question. Anomalies in team score trends were matched to course schedules coded by types of course activities. Results: Average team scores were 84.38%, 100% and 100% in 2011; 48.96%, 97.92%, 92.71% and 97.92% in 2012; and 72.92%, 98.96%, 98.96% and 100% in 2013. In 2012, individual team scores were 100%, 100% and 78.13% for Simulation #3 and 100%, 96.88% and 96.88% for Simulation #2. Simulations #2 and #3 in 2012 were 6 weeks apart. Conclusion: To maintain a high level of competency in teamwork and communication skills, interprofessional teams should consider doing simulations at least once every 4 weeks.

- This paper aims to explore what is known on the effects, facilitators and barriers of nurses’ participation in interprofessional patient rounds (IPR) on inpatient hospital units. Implementing IPR is difficult and seen as controversial, but earlier studies of IPR had shown positive quality of care effects, decreased medical errors, and improved patient safety from communication problems. We wanted to know the state of science in the last five years since we would expect broader implementation. The guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta Analyses directed this integrated review. We conducted a systematic search in the databases Current Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed, PsychInfo, and Embase. Articles were included if they were: (a) a research study published in English; (b) in a peer-reviewed journal; (c) published between 2013 - 2018; (d) the setting studied was an inpatient hospital unit; and, (e) the study involved a reasonable number of nurses per other providers studied. After reviewing 629 titles, abstracts, and articles, a final sample of n = 14 qualitative research studies were used to synthesize findings (See Figure 1 PRISMA). IPR showed positive effects for the hospital units studied, including: (a) improving nurses’ job satisfaction; (b) improving working relationships between physicians and nurses; and, (c) improving patient-and family centered care. Yet, the study designs used have also constrained the generalizability. More studies should implement research designs that account for the various types of biases noted. The findings give preliminary data that could be useful to nursing administrators for improving nurse turnover, engaging nurses in patient care-planning or family advocacy, which could ultimately improve patient and family-centered care.
