Abstract Tesim:
As a 2023 Robinson Honors Fellow, I traveled across the United Kingdom to study the history and culture of beekeeping in the region. To conduct my research I visited Wales, Scotland, Bath, and London. I met with urban beekeepers, beekeepers using traditional methods, and professors, and I visited libraries, all to uncover the history of beekeeping in the British Isles with an eye to aiding honeybees in the modern world.

In the summer of 2023, I excavated an archaeological site just outside of Rome called Gabii, an ancient Latin city. After the excavation, I traveled to the Bay of Naples to study the sites preserved by Mount Vesuvius like Pompeii and Herculaneum.

I was accepted as a Robinson Honors Fellow in 2020 but due to COVID-19 I completed my research in the summer of 2021. I visited three states, California, Virginia, and Maryland with the aim to study psychiatric history and compare the practices of the 17th-19th centuries to what is practiced today. By examining this topic, I sought to understand the major historical conceptions of mental illnesses and compare the treatment and diagnosis given to patients at that time to our modern society and how we treat and understand patients

5. Empowering the Women in French Romantic Opera

Abstract Tesim:
The Robinson Honors Fellowship granted me the opportunity to perform and study French Romantic opera in Miami Beach and Cincinnati in the summer of 2021. I understudied the title role in Massenet's Cendrillon and performed as Third Spirit at the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival while undergoing coachings, masterclasses, and lessons with esteemed faculty. I then travelled to Cincinnati to perform in the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music's Bizet Opera Gala, featuring three of his operas. All four of the operas I interacted with feature female protagonists written by men and for a primary audience of men, meaning the empowerment of these characters was not prioritized. While growing my vocal craft, I researched the historicity of these operas and the women who have played these roles, discovering how female opera singers have long found ways to reclaim their power in operas that may have been originally disempowering.

During my fellowship, I spent a week in Salem, MA and a month in London, England evaluating how witch trials are held in collective memory in both countries. Through this project, I was able to explore the intersection of persecution, public history, and the maintenance of a historical record.

Abstract Tesim:
Summer 2019, London and Paris Banu spent her summer visiting historical mental institutions in England and France to conduct a comparison of the physical space of the institutions. She analyzed the architectural design of those institutions in relation to the confinement of psychiatric patients and compare how the decisions made in designing the institutions reflect the historic cultural values surrounding the needs of psychiatric patients in the 18th and 19th centuries.

2019 Robinson Honors Fellowship In the aftermath of the First World War’s devastation, Virginia Woolf and her peers in the Bloomsbury Group were committed to a view of identity and personhood as fractured and dispersed. I investigated how these thinkers addressed such topics in their respective compositions, and how they changed over the course of the war period, by studying their original notes, letters, diary entries, and drafts at the British Library and Bloomsbury Museum in London.
