Transatlantic Slave Trade through the Lens of Omar ibn Said and Gorée Island

Abstract Tesim:
In this lesson, students will take a narrowly focused view on the slave trade by investigating the story of Omar ibn Said and how it connects Senegal and North Carolina. In addition, students will explore Gorée Island in Senegal and its connection to the Atlantic history of slavery.

Students will explore the relationship between manmade and natural resources and how recycling and repurposing can contribute to economics and cultural identities in Senegal. They will create their own toys from recycled materials.
Students will explore the food of Senegal, including traditional dishes and food sources. They will compare them with those of North Carolina, and discuss regions and why some items are more common in specific areas (rural, urban, coastal). They will also compare markets and stores in North Carolina and Senegal.
Students will explore traditional folklore of Senegal, and make connections to familiar traditional folktales and to Griots. They will also read aloud a Readers Theater adaptation of “The Hunter and the Crocodile.”
Students will explore images from in and around Dakar, drawing conclusions, adjusting misconceptions, and diving deeper into Senegalese culture in grade level appropriate ways. The goal is for students to learn about Senegal while
honing their observational skills and vocabulary, and to actively participate in inquiry-based Social Studies.
Students will examine the roles of women in contemporary Senegal, including but not exclusive to family and economy. They will compare and contrast what they know about the
roles of women in their own community, region, state, and country with comparable areas in Senegal.
In this lesson, students will explore and compare major religious landmarks in Senegal. Students will also investigate how a building’s purpose can reflect artistic or design choices and how architecture and cultural practices can reflect or affect each other.
In this lesson, students will look at different types of maps from Senegal and use them for fact finding and to draw conclusions about life, the economy, and the environment in Senegal. Students will also create their own map that “tells a story.”
