In 1953, UNC Press and the UNC Department of Germanic & Slavic Languages and Literatures started the UNC Studies in Germanic Languages and Literatures series. Over the next fifty years, the series published 127 monographs, anthologies, and critical editions. The series strove for breadth in its coverage of scholarship in the Germanic languages, covering an array of topics including medieval and modern literature, theater, linguistics, philology, onomastics, and the history of ideas. With this project, these two partners, joined by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library, will reissue the series in print and open access digital editions, making these books discoverable and accessible to a new generation of German studies scholars and students. By analyzing Chrétien's "Cligès", Ulrich von Zatzikhoven's "Lanzelet", Chrétien's "Chevalier de la Charette", and the Old French "Prose Lancelot", as well as Andreas Capellanus' "De Amore" and Eschenbach's "Parzival", Weigand presents a picture of the ideals of courtly love in Europe in the latter half of the twelfth and beginning of the thirteenth centuries. A long chapter on "Parzival" focuses especially on the introduction of Christian themes and changing ideas of the compatibility of love and marriage.

This book provides a critical study of all seven of Hoffmann's "Kunstmärchen". Vitt-Maucher's detailed individual analyses focus on Hoffmann's use of structural, stylistic, and linguistic devices to create poetic deviations from the norms of reality. These deviations are diverse: distortions of language and time altered dimensions of reality, persons, and objects transformations and reversals of 'normal' conditions or conventions. They underlie Hoffmann's often humorous or grotesque world of fairy tale 'magic' and convey to the reader the poet's intent. In the course of his fairy tale production (1814–1821), Hoffmann's use of language, imagery, and structure becomes increasingly distorted and alienated from everyday reality. Similarly, his employment of humor develops from early sociocritical, ironic, and parodistic intent to more autonomous and clearly less referential forms of 'absolute humor.'

This study traces the importance of Italy as a source of literary inspiration in the work of the Swabian poet Wilhelm Waiblinger (1804-1830), who spent the last four years of his life, the most prolific of his career, living and traveling in Italy. Drawing on Waiblinger's poems, travel accounts, letters and diaries, Thompson compiles and analyzes Waiblinger's thoughts on and engagement with Italian art, literature, music, people and landscapes as well as the themes of antiquity, Renaissance, and Catholicism.

To the medievalist, Tannhäuser is the author of ironical and highly original lyrical verse to the folklorist, the subject of one of Germany's oldest ballads to the musicologist, the composer of the only extant music for a "Tanzleich" and the hero of several operas. J. W. Thomas examines the content and style of Tannhäuser's verse, discusses his sources and his influence on other medieval poets, and gives a history of the ballad material in which he appears. Also included is a diplomatic edition of Tannhäuser's poems, both verse translations of the poems and a version of the ballad, and an extensive bibliography.
