Abstract Tesim:
The goal of this study is to compare the attitudes of American citizens towards wearing masks at different times by implementing sentiment analysis on tweets posted in different time periods of the year 2020. The third-party open-source package Twint was used to collect Twitter data. After data preprocessing, the VADER algorithm was adopted and validated for sentiment analysis. Several analyses on word frequency, highly correlated words, and daily sentiment distribution were also applied. This study shows the differences between sentiment and opinion analysis and the possible research misunderstanding it may engender.

Abstract Tesim:
This study explores the role of art museums’ websites in museum operations after the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. It seeks to provide a landscape of the art museum reaction through a qualitative content analysis during the pandemic by sampling nine art museums’ websites in three states. The sampled websites showed a consistent increase in their elements and activities. Over a six-month period, the art museums' webpages changed in terms of content and structure to serve different types of audiences and to meet the constantly changing needs of the users. This study summarizes common and different strategies adopted by each museum and identifies functional changes in the art museum websites. The findings indicate the impact of COVID-19 on the art museum community and provide directions for the future virtualization and web-based activities of cultural heritage institutions experiencing unavoidable external factors affecting onsite visitation.

Abstract Tesim:
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to answer the question of why being or feeling alone can contribute to depression or suicidal ideation. One possible answer, according to our study, is that loneliness often leads people to feel that they do not matter, thus distorting an essential component of human mental health. We therefore hypothesized that mattering would mediate the relationships between loneliness and depression (H1), as well as loneliness and suicidality (H2). Study 1, which tested H1, was a secondary analysis of longitudinal data on mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study 2 tested H2 using cross-sectional samples of college students and nationwide adults. In Study 2, we additionally hoped to discern the impact of different types of perceived mattering (i.e., mattering to close others, like family and friends, versus mattering to one’s community) on depression and suicide. H1 was supported and H2 was partially supported. In Study 1, mattering mediated the relationship between loneliness and depression. In Study 2, context-free mattering mediated the relationship between loneliness and suicidality. We also found evidence of indirect effects of community mattering on suicidality in both samples and direct effects of close mattering on suicidality in nationwide adults. However, we found no evidence of a direct effect of community mattering on suicidality. Our results therefore provide support that mattering can have a direct impact on mental health outcomes and suggest that mattering could be targeted as a protective factor for depression and suicide in future interventions.

Abstract Tesim:
Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, North Carolina’s public libraries have had to adapt their services and programs. This study compares data provided to the State Library of North Carolina from a purposive stratified sample of North Carolina’s public libraries with the researcher’s own content analysis of the sample’s websites. The comparisons showed that there were useful adaptations to programs and services made by the sample libraries but that these programs and services were not always readily identifiable on the sample libraries’ websites.

Abstract Tesim:
More and more people tend to gain information about the pandemic from social network and they may change their opinions about coronavirus accordingly. Therefore, the effect of social media should not be ignored in the spreading of COVID-19. This paper will investigate whether sentiments expressed on social media would affect the spreading of COVID-19. The correlation between sentiments on Twitter and the COVID-19 cases in a particular range of time will be explored using statistical methods, such as Pearson’s correlation, and Spearman's Rho with time-series analysis. The result shows that there is no strong correlation between sentiments on Twitter and spreading of COVID-19.

Abstract Tesim:
This thesis analyzed the COVID-19 pandemic and its prevalent issues in both US and China. What the COVID-19 pandemic made visible is an alarming side of the political ideologies in both countries. It came to the conclusion that, for China, while solidarity gives the nation the strength to defeat the pandemic, a top-down censorship is penetrated into the collective mentality. For the United States, a greater sense of community embodied in mutual obligation and shared sacrifice is much needed to combat the pandemic. Furthermore, more public trust in science and a more accurate appreciation of the harm to others that is caused by ignoring mask-wearing mandates and social distancing regulations.

Abstract Tesim:
In response to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 in the Hispanic/Latino community in Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties, Spanish-English bilingual, bicultural residents were recruited to serve as Community Ambassador Real Equality (CARE Team) ambassadors to develop and disseminate COVID-19 public health guidance in partnership with Partners Aligned Toward Health (PATH), Mountain Community Health Partnership (MCHP), and faculty and students from UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s MPH Program in Asheville. Professionals from the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), Yancey County Emergency Management, Pisgah Legal Services, and WNC Health Network provide additional training and relevant resources to the ambassadors. The CARE initiative is using the Boot Camp Translation process, an evidence-based community engagement model that brings community members and professionals together to create and share culturally responsive and relevant health messaging to the local community (Westfall et al., 2016). The Boot Camp Translation model has been adapted to keep pace with a rapidly evolving pandemic. In our adaptation, the program builds relationships and channels of communication between health professionals and the Hispanic/Latino community. PATH and partners strive to engage community members as valued partners with important perspectives throughout the process. The goal of the initiative is to address the disproportionate spread of COVID-19 in the Hispanic/Latino communities, while simultaneously decreasing the overall spread of the virus. The long-term program aim is to increase service providers’ cultural humility and responsiveness, establish channels of communication between the Hispanic/Latino community and local agencies, and strengthen Hispanic/Latino leadership in the Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey community.

Abstract Tesim:
COVID-19 dramatically changed American work environments, including positions in academic archives. This research explores the impact of COVID-19 on small academic archives and the effectiveness of disaster management plans and scholarship in mitigating damages and fallout. Thus, the research questions are as follows: What disaster management strategies have small academic archives employed in response to COVID- 19, and what implications do these responses have for future archival disaster management strategies? This study employs a qualitative thematic analysis of interview responses from liberal arts college archivists and special collections librarians selected from the Oberlin Group of Libraries on their COVID-19 responses. Data gathered from surveys and interviews were analyzed and compiled to evaluate key themes. This research may serve as a starting point for a fuller exploration of disaster management strategies in the wake of COVID-19, not only at archival collections of small liberal arts colleges, but also at similarly sized cultural heritage institutions.

Abstract Tesim:
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased housing instability and put millions of renters at risk of displacement since stay-at-home orders began in the US in March 2020. Federal, state, and local actors rushed to expand and adapt existing housing policies, and create new ones, to prevent the additional public health disaster of millions of Americans being evicted. This paper examines two housing policy measures – eviction moratoria and emergency rental assistance (ERA) – taken to prevent evictions during COVID-19, exploring these policies at the federal, state, and local level. The paper uses the state of North Carolina, specifically Orange County, as a case study, examining Orange County’s Emergency Housing Assistance (EHA) fund. Finally, this paper examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the weaknesses of US affordable housing policy, and explores potential policy proposals for the future of housing in the US.

Abstract Tesim:
This paper aims to look at the political factors around lane reallocations on commercial and mixed-use streets in the United States during the COVID pandemic. Using multiple case studies, this project will examine the political factors around the decision-making process, implementation, and discussions about the future of these interventions. Case study analysis will be conducted by examining the messaging in public meetings and associated materials, and supplemented by the author’s experience as staff at one of the case studies. This paper is targeted at people interested in the impacts of the COVID pandemic on support for active travel, and aims to set up future research on how these interventions fare after the pandemic.
