Abstract Tesim:: Atmospheric chemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has significant influence on human health and global climate change. As the most globallyabundant non-methane VOC in the atmosphere, isoprene is an important precursor of both ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). A number of gas-phase chemical mechanisms have been developed to predict O3 formation from isoprene in the atmosphere. However, most of these chemical mechanisms have limitations, including being too condensed to represent most major gas-phase products or being too large for use in current air quality models (AQM). In addition, recent laboratory, mechanistic, and field studies have demonstrated new chemistry for isoprene photooxidation such as the regeneration of HOx (OH+HO2) and the formation of SOA. Hence, there is a necessity to develop a new chemical mechanism based upon the recent results. In this thesis, a new condensed gas-phase isoprene mechanism is developed and evaluated against over fifty experiments that were performed in the UNC dual outdoor smog chamber under natural sunlight. The mechanism implements the regeneration of HOx, the intermediate products that form SOA, and other results from recent studies. This new mechanism is able to reasonably simulate most experimental data and also performs well comparing to the other currently used chemical mechanisms. Unlike the well understood gas-phase isoprene chemistry, the isoprene SOA formation mechanism remains elusive. This thesis investigated SOA formation from isoprene as well as methacrolein (MACR), which is the major first-generation product of isoprene photooxidation, under varied initial nitric oxide (NO) levels, relative humidities (RHs), and seed aerosol acidities. Results indicate that both SOA mass concentration and chemical composition largely depend on the initial VOC/NO ratios and RH conditions.Most particle-phase oligomers, which have been previously observed to form from the oxidation of methacryloylperoxynitrate (MPAN), were enhanced under dry conditions. In addition, a nitrogen-containing organic tracer compound was found to form substantially in both isoprene/MACR chamber-generated and ambient aerosol samples. Moreover, increased RH and aerosol acidity were both observed to enhance organosulfate formation; however, elevating RH mediates organosulfate formation, suggesting that wet sulfate aerosols are necessary in forming organosulfates in atmospheric aerosols.

Abstract Tesim:: Forest modification, from local stress to global change, has given rise to efforts to model, map, and monitor critical properties of forest communities like structure, composition, and diversity. Predictive models based on data from spatially-nested field plots and LiDAR-hyperspectral remote sensing systems are one particularly effective means towards the otherwise prohibitively resource-intensive task of consistently characterizing forest community dynamics at landscape scales. However, to date, most predictive models fail to account for actual (rather than idealized) species and community distributions, are unsuccessful in predicting understory components in structurally and taxonomically heterogeneous forests, and may suffer from diminished predictive accuracy due to incongruity in scale and precision between field plot samples, remotely-sensed data, and target biota of varying size and density. This three-part study addresses these and other concerns in the modeling and mapping of emergent properties of forest communities by shifting the scope of prediction from the individual or taxon to the whole stand or community. It is, after all, at the stand scale where emergent properties like functional processes, biodiversity, and habitat aggregate and manifest. In the first study, I explore the relationship between forest structure (a proxy for successional demographics and resource competition) and tree species diversity in the North Carolina Piedmont, highlighting the empirical basis and potential for utilizing forest structure from LiDAR in predictive models of tree species diversity. I then extend these conclusions to map landscape pattern in multi-scale vascular plant diversity as well as turnover in community-continua at varying compositional resolutions in a North Carolina Piedmont landscape using remotely-sensed LiDAR-hyperspectral estimates of topography, canopy structure, and foliar biochemistry. Recognizing that the distinction between correlation and causation mirrors that between knowledge and understanding, all three studies distinguish between prediction of pattern and inference of process. Thus, in addition to advancing mapping methodologies relevant to a range of forest ecosystem management and monitoring applications, all three studies are noteworthy for assessing the ecological relationship between environmental predictors and emergent landscape patterns in plant composition and diversity in North Carolina Piedmont forests.

Abstract Tesim:: Nowhere are the consequences of climate change greater than in the Arctic. The Arctic Climate Impact Assessment synthesized the potential impacts of climate change to Arctic ecosystems, including vegetation changes projected for 2100 using the BIOME4 dynamic vegetation model. In my research I synthesized empirical data from 30 studies of Arctic vegetation responses to climate change, and compared these data to the ACIA projected vegetation distribution for 2100. A general agreement between observed and projected changes was found, with exceptions due to regional variability and geographic clustering of the empirical data. There exist large areas of Siberia east of the Taymyr Peninsula and the Arctic Peninsula without empirical data, but are projected to undergo expansive change. Likewise, geographically limited empirical data have been published for large areas with no projected change in central Siberia and in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, Canada.

Abstract Tesim:: The spatiotemporal distribution of freshwater resources on Earth is controlled by interacting climatologic, ecological, and physical processes. These dynamics are likely to change in the future due to climate and land cover changes with important implications for life on Earth. Ecosystem simulation models which couple these processes are increasingly relied upon to provide projections of probable future changes so that resources may be sustainably managed and future growth and development planned. The majority of these models depend critically on surface descriptions such as land cover and vegetation abundance obtained from remotely sensed images, and remote sensing methods have played an essential role in accurately parameterizing and implementing models at appreciable spatial scales. However, significant challenges exist for investigations adopting an integrated remote sensing and ecosystem simulation approach. This investigation sought to quantify the likely impacts of climate change and land cover change on the water cycle of the Eno River basin in central North Carolina. Special attention was paid to addressing and overcoming existing remote sensing methodological limitations related to mapping leaf area index (LAI) and land cover. Improved methods were developed and the resulting products used to parameterize two different ecohydrologic models which were then used to quantify the hydrological effects of various climate and land cover change scenarios. The improved methods are demonstrated to overcome several of the major existing limitations to mapping LAI and land cover accurately, consistently, and efficiently with diverse data sources. These improvements lead to greater confidence in simulated results and future projections. The results of this investigation highlight the dominant role that climate plays in structuring basin response, and indicate that future changes may increase water stress in the area, particularly under scenarios of reduced growing season precipitation.

Abstract Tesim:: Assessments of global Pliocene climate using conventional proxies indicate prevalent warmth at mid to high latitudes. However, it remains poorly understood how these climate changes were manifested on a regional basis and on annual timescales. Oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of fossil Mercenaria spp. (bivalve) shells enable reconstruction of growth temperature to estimate sea surface temperature (SST) at seasonal resolution, and comparing growth characteristics of fossil and modern populations can provide independent SST estimates. Fossil shells selected from the Yorktown Formation (Pliocene, early Piacenzian, ~3.3-3.0 Ma, warm interval) and the Chowan River Formation (Pleistocene, Gelasian, 2.4-1.8 Ma, subsequent cooling) of the US Mid Atlantic Coastal Plain document warmth and reduced seasonality relative to modern. Growth analyses of fossil populations likely exclude the possibility of more extreme (>25°C) average annual conditions. These results support model results of increased meridional heat transport during the Pliocene.

Abstract Tesim:: I present time-varying Reeb graphs as a topological framework to support the analysis of continuous time-varying data. Such data is captured in many studies, including computational fluid dynamics, oceanography, medical imaging, and climate modeling, by measuring physical processes over time, or by modeling and simulating them on a computer. Analysis tools are applied to these data sets by scientists and engineers who seek to understand the underlying physical processes. A popular tool for analyzing scientific datasets is level sets, which are the points in space with a fixed data value s. Displaying level sets allows the user to study their geometry, their topological features such as connected components, handles, and voids, and to study the evolution of these features for varying s. For static data, the Reeb graph encodes the evolution of topological features and compactly represents topological information of all level sets. The Reeb graph essentially contracts each level set component to a point. It can be computed efficiently, and it has several uses: as a succinct summary of the data, as an interface to select meaningful level sets, as a data structure to accelerate level set extraction, and as a guide to remove noise. I extend these uses of Reeb graphs to time-varying data. I characterize the changes to Reeb graphs over time, and develop an algorithm that can maintain a Reeb graph data structure by tracking these changes over time. I store this sequence of Reeb graphs compactly, and call it a time-varying Reeb graph. I augment the time-varying Reeb graph with information that records the topology of level sets of all level values at all times, that maintains the correspondence of level set components over time, and that accelerates the extraction of level sets for a chosen level value and time. Scientific data sampled in space-time must be extended everywhere in this domain using an interpolant. A poor choice of interpolant can create degeneracies that are difficult to resolve, making construction of time-varying Reeb graphs impractical. I investigate piecewise-linear, piecewise-trilinear, and piecewise-prismatic interpolants, and conclude that piecewise-prismatic is the best choice for computing time-varying Reeb graphs. Large Reeb graphs must be simplified for an effective presentation in a visualization system. I extend an algorithm for simplifying static Reeb graphs to compute simplifications of time-varying Reeb graphs as a first step towards building a visualization system to support the analysis of time-varying data.

Abstract Tesim:: This dissertation, composed of three studies, examines the potential for unconditional cash transfers to reduce poverty in rural Africa and considers the serious challenges posed by weak market access, natural resource dependence, and climate shocks that threaten food supplies. To investigate these questions we harness the randomized roll-out of Zambia's Child Grant Program, which extends - unconditionally - payments of 60 kwacha (about $12) per month to households with a child under the age of five. We find that these relatively small cash payments are transformative for rural Zambian households in numerous ways. First, cash transfers empower poor, rural households facing weather and other negative income shocks to employ coping strategies typically used by the non-poor, such as spending savings. The transfers also enable households to substantially increase their food consumption and overall food security over time, despite widespread drought and flooding. Second, cash transfers allow households to expand their farms. Third, the income effects of cash are powerful enough to shift livelihood strategies and convert subsistence farmers into small-scale farmers that sell some fraction of their crops in markets, purchase agricultural inputs, and own non-farm businesses. However, there is significant impact heterogeneity moderated by households' market access. We find that while cash is more transformative than bicycle ownership (which can facilitate market access) in terms of converting subsistence farmers into small-scale sellers, bicycles can empower households already engaged in agricultural markets to increase their crop sales over time - even in the context of declining crop revenues. We also find that cash has a greater impact on farm expansion for households living far from markets, while households living close to markets are more likely to use the transfer to start non-farm businesses and consume charcoal. These three studies provide evidence that unconditional cash transfers facilitate rural households' autonomous adaptation and development decisions and these decisions are helping households escape poverty, despite challenges posed by climate change and remoteness. However, the productive impacts of cash transfers in rural areas could be enhanced by complementary initiatives that improve market access and promote sustainable use of natural resources.

Abstract Tesim:: During the last glacial period, warming events with different characteristics occurred on each Polar Region. In the Greenland records, the warming episodes, are abrupt and strong. In contrast, the Antarctic events of the same age are gradual and mild. While it is generally accepted that these events have a one-to-one relationship, their exact linkage mechanism remains unknown. In the following text, I have organized my research findings into three chapters, with each presenting a unique aspect of the polar climate relationship. In the first chapter, I associated the polar climates and their synchronization relation to the massive ice rafted detritus deposits (Heinrich events and IRD events) found across North Atlantic. Assuming the validity of the recent hypothesis of phase synchronization between polar records, I was able to develop indices that hindcast the timings of the Heinrich events. I then discussed the potential physical mechanisms that could connect the changes in the polar climates to the Heinrich events. In the second chapter, I conducted an inter-comparison study of all relevant published models, that seek to explain the polar climate connection, based on both their mathematical model properties, and their skills in reproducing actual records. Through the comparison, I demonstrated that the phase synchronization model exceeds the other two in its ability to reproduce actual records. While proposing the phase synchronization as a favorable framework, I also discussed the potential mechanism that integrates the phase synchronization and thermal bipolar seesaw models. After established the phase synchronization as the most accurate and robust model, in my third and last chapter, I extracted the variations in the strength of the phase synchronization by calculating the windowed mean phase coherence between the polar ice core records. My results revealed that, with strong phase coherence during majority of the glacial period, instances of weak coherence did happen. More importantly, further analysis revealed a persistent insolation lead over the variations in phase coherence. This discovery provides new ways of interpreting not only the polar climate relationship itself, but also the origin of the glacial warming events.

Abstract Tesim:: This research aims to understand the intimate linkages between hazards, infrastructure, and indigenous politics in the context of anti-dam activism and a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the Eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim, India. The Indian Himalayan Region, a climate change hotspot, is witnessing a massive surge in large scale infrastructural development alongside an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural hazard events. Earthquakes and landslides near hydropower project sites, along with incidents of shamanic possession by angered mountain deities, raised serious doubts about the viability of hydropower projects for both local communities and regional technocrats. I take a materialist and postcolonial approach to examine how state apathy combined with the visceral quality of ecological precarity, has prompted solidarity between disparate groups and demands for policies and projects sensitive to the region’s cultural and geo-physical particularities. I also foreground the experiences of indigenous youth to demonstrate how environmental vulnerability has a direct bearing on young people’s lives, labor, and politics. Young people are at the center of this research as it interrogates how these myriad transformations are shaping their political subjectivities, which are ultimately tied to the political, cultural, and ecological future of this region. Employing qualitative and participatory research methodologies I present a fine-grained analysis of the geo-physical, cultural, and political processes that interrupt the centralization of state authority and environmental governance in the Himalayan region.

Abstract Tesim:: Climate change and air quality are interrelated issues. Policies to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will not only slow climate change, but can also bring co-benefits of improved air quality and avoided mortality. Here I examine the co-benefits of global and regional GHG mitigation on US air quality and human health in 2050 at fine resolution, by dynamically downscaling a previous global study on the co-benefits of global GHG mitigation. The US average total co-benefits of global GHG mitigation in RCP4.5 are 0.47 µg m-3 for annual average PM2.5 and 3.55 ppb for ozone-season maximum daily 8-hour average O3, avoiding 24500 (90% confidence interval, 17800-31100) all-cause deaths related to PM2.5, and 12200 (5400-18900) respiratory deaths for O3. Reductions in co-emitted air pollutants dominate the total co-benefits, much higher than those via slowing climate change. GHG mitigation from foreign countries avoids 3700 (2700-4700) PM2.5-related deaths (15% of the total), and contributes more to the US O3 reduction than domestic GHG mitigation, avoiding 7600 O3-related deaths (3400-11900, 62%), highlighting the importance of global methane reductions and intercontinental air pollutant transport. GHG mitigation in the US residential sector brings the largest co-benefits for PM2.5-related deaths (21% of the total domestic co-benefits), and industry for O3 (17%). The US gains significantly greater co-benefits by coordinating GHG reductions with foreign countries. Previous studies estimating co-benefits locally or regionally may greatly underestimate the full co-benefits of coordinated global actions. I also investigated the causes of changes in the global tropospheric ozone burden (BO3) from 1980 to 2010 using a global atmospheric model, isolating the effect of the emissions shifting southwards from emission increases in developing countries and decreases in developed countries. The global emission spatial distribution change accounts for more than half of the total BO3 change (28.12 Tg), even larger than the combined effects of the global emission magnitude change and global methane change. This highlights the dominant role of emissions from the tropics, especially over South and Southeast Asia, for the tropospheric O3 burden, and suggests that BO3 might continue to increase as emissions shift south, even if global emissions remain unchanged or even decrease.
