The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) is a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States during the 1994-95 school year. The Add Health cohort has been followed into young adulthood with four in-home interviews, the most recent in 2008, when the sample was aged 24-32. Add Health is re-interviewing cohort members in a Wave V follow-up from 2016-2018 to collect social, environmental, behavioral, and biological data with which to track the emergence of chronic disease as the cohort moves through their fourth decade of life. Add Health combines longitudinal survey data on respondents’ social, economic, psychological and physical well-being with contextual data on the family, neighborhood, community, school, friendships, peer groups, and romantic relationships, providing unique opportunities to study how social environments and behaviors in adolescence are linked to health and achievement outcomes in young adulthood. The fourth wave of interviews expanded the collection of biological data in Add Health to understand the social, behavioral, and biological linkages in health trajectories as the Add Health cohort ages through adulthood, and the fifth wave of data collection continues this biological data expansion.

The source data used to construct this contextual file for the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) come from Mapping Inequality: Redlining in New Deal America, compiled by Robert K. Nelson and the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond. This file augments the current Add Health contextual data collection by providing information about whether a respondent’s place of residence falls inside or within varying proximities to historically redlined neighborhood boundaries at the time of their Wave I, III, IV, and V survey interviews. This contextual database allows researchers to identify potential long-term consequences of redlining for contemporary inequities in neighborhood environments, and individual health and socioeconomic attainment over the life course. Before analyzing these data, however, we urge users to review the following background section and cited references.

Wave V measures of neurodegeneration were based on venous blood collected via phlebotomy. The blood was collected by field examiners (FEs) certified in phlebotomy, chilled at 4°C during the remainder of the home exam, centrifuged immediately afterward, aliquoted into transport tubes, sent overnight to a laboratory, archived at -80°C, subsequently thawed at 36°C, and then assayed. Abstract Tesim:
This document provides a brief overview of the steps in constructing GWAS sample weights. It also reports results of some statistical analysis using the constructed weights. The total number of GWAS sample (N=9,975) who were actually assayed and number of those (N=12,234) who consented to be archived and assayed are different. When the proportions of subjects who have consented and who have actually been assayed are different for certain Add Health post-stratification domains, this might cause problems if we simply use grand sample weights for GWAS sample (Bethlehem 2002). We thus developed weights for this special sample.

Abstract Tesim:
Depressive symptoms are common, affecting an estimated 18.5% of adults in the United States (US) in a recent two-week period (Villarroel and Terlizzi 2020). The prevalence of depressive symptoms rose sharply among US adolescents and young adults between 2012 and 2018 (Keyes et al. 2019) and tripled among adults ages 18 and over from 2019 to 2020 during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (Ettman et al. 2020). The burden of depressive symptoms is also unequally distributed across the US population, such that some sociodemographic groups tend to experience higher depressive symptom levels than others. This data brief highlights the utility of using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to study depressive symptoms among US adults.

Abstract Tesim:
The Opportunity Atlas: Mapping the Childhood Roots of Social Mobility, compiled by Opportunity Insights, served as the source data used in the construction of this National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) data file. This file enhances the existing Add Health contextual database through the addition of measures essential to understanding the determinants and sequelae of socioeconomic mobility. Specifically, it aims to characterize the socioeconomic mobility of Add Health participants at Wave I, IV, and V. Though the included variables report the mobility of people born from 1980 to 1991 at the U.S. tract- and county-levels and, therefore, remain constant across the waves of Add Health, the locations inhabited by respondents typically vary from wave to wave. In other words, these data provide measures of the opportunities for socioeconomic mobility for similarly aged people residing in the same tract or county as the Add Health respondent at a given wave. The timing of the mobility measures, however, remains invariant across waves.

The Wave V County Health and Mobility database summarizes the socioeconomic, health, and mobility characteristics of the environments in which Add Health participants were living at the time of their Wave V interview. County-level data describe (1) levels of and trends in chronic disease (hypertension, type-2 diabetes) and health risk behaviors (obesity, smoking, alcohol use); and (2) economic opportunity and inequality. This contextual database permits innovative research that investigates how place influences health, behavior, and social outcomes across the transition from adolescence to the beginning of midlife, thereby, enhancing studies of the determinants and sequelae of socio-geographic mobility.

This guide documents the key information regarding the construction and use of polygenic indexes (PGIs) for the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) as part of the Resource Profile and User Guide of the Polygenic Index Repository. Summary Information About PGIs Polygenic indexes (PGIs) are constructed using the same general approach (described below) and have the same substantive meaning as polygenic scores (PGSs, used more prominently in social science genomics contexts) and genetic risk scores (GRSs, used more prominently in the medical contexts). Here, we provide a brief summary of how the PGIs were constructed (please see the Methods section of Becker et al. for a more detailed description). We refer the reader to the relevant tables of Becker et al. where more information can be found.

This contextual database further expands the extensive contextual data currently available to users of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) through the provision of numerous measures reported by the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS), rural-urban commuting area codes, U.S. Climate Atlas, and Uniform Crime Report. The data provide an important update to the contextual variables already available for previous waves of the study. Additionally, there are a few new variables in the present database that are absent from other waves. This data release increases the possibilities and quality of the contextual analyses that researchers may conduct using Add Health by permitting various longitudinal analyses of significant socio-economic and geographic characteristics defining the environments in which Add Health respondents lived during Waves I through V.Most of the variables included in this contextual file measure context at the census tract-, county-, and state-levels.
