The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) is a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States during the 1994-95 school year. The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) is a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States during the 1994-95 school year. The Add Health cohort has been followed into young adulthood with four in-home interviews, the most recent in 2008, when the sample was aged 24-32. Add Health is re-interviewing cohort members in a Wave V follow-up from 2016-2018 to collect social, environmental, behavioral, and biological data with which to track the emergence of chronic disease as the cohort moves through their fourth decade of life. Add Health combines longitudinal survey data on respondents’ social, economic, psychological and physical well-being with contextual data on the family, neighborhood, community, school, friendships, peer groups, and romantic relationships, providing unique opportunities to study how social environments and behaviors in adolescence are linked to health and achievement outcomes in young adulthood. The fourth wave of interviews expanded the collection of biological data in Add Health to understand the social, behavioral, and biological linkages in health trajectories as the Add Health cohort ages through adulthood, and the fifth wave of data collection continues this biological data expansion.

Abstract Tesim:
Research has shown that many outcomes of interest in the health, behavioral, and social sciences are influenced by genetics (Domingue et al. 2016; Plomin et al. 2016; Turkheimer 2000). For most human traits/behaviors, commonly referred to as phenotypes in genetic literature, it appears that the genetic influence on the phenotype is highly polygenic; i.e., there is no single gene that can account for the association between genetic variance and the outcome. Instead, the influence of genetics on the phenotype is due to many small associations spread across single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs, pronounced snips) (Chabris et al. 2015). Polygenic Scores allow researchers to avoid the methodological complexities of including hundreds, thousands, and possibly millions, of covariates in their analyses by condensing, into a single measure, the associations between individual SNPs and the phenotype of interest (Plomin, Haworth, and Davis 2009).

Religiosity is important because religious affiliations and/or participation have been linked to outcomes across life domains, including volunteering (Johnston, 2013), the timing of births with respect to marriage (Pearce & Davis, 2016), marital stability, family size, educational attainment, and physical and mental health (Lehrer, 2008). Young adulthood is a life stage when young people establish separate lives from their parents, become financially independent, pursue career goals, and grow into their own identity, values, and lifestyle (Harris, 2010). With the influence of parents’ religious beliefs and affiliations on youth religiosity dwindling (Arnett & Jensen, 2002; Hoge, Johnson, & Luidens, 1993), we explore patterns of religiosity in young adulthood. This brief provides a snapshot of the religious life of young adults in the United States. We describe the demographic patterns associated with religiosity and address the following questions: 1. With what religions do young people identify? 2. How religious are young people in their beliefs and actions—in both public and private spheres? 3. How do answers to these questions vary by gender, age, race/ethnicity, education levels, and family formation?

Much has been written about the delayed timing of many events that mark the transition to young adulthood in developed countries.1 This historical change is especially important for romantic partnerships because the type and the choices made within these relationships can have a lasting impact on adult health and well-being. 2,3 The relationship context involving closeness, trust, concurrent partners and even violence varies across relationship types. Moreover, the quality and diversity of these relationships shape trajectories for psychosocial well-being and future relationship quality.2 In this research brief, we describe the demographic patterns and quality of contemporary young adult relationships and address the following three questions: 1. What types of romantic relationships do young adults have, and how many are not currently in a relationship? 2. What are the demographic characteristics, in terms of gender, age differences, and race/ethnicity, of these relationships? 3. What is the quality of different types of young adult relationships, as indicated by relationship closeness, concurrent partners, and intimate partner violence?

Young adulthood is associated with increased responsibilities, including financial independence, career development, and starting a family. Young Americans between the ages of 25-34 spend more time at work and caring for others, and have less free time than younger age groups.1 With more time dedicated to these responsibilities, young adults may not have as much time to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Over time, less healthy lifestyle behaviors set health trajectories into adulthood, increasing the risks of morbidities and chronic disease in the future. Lifestyle and health related behavioral choices are important factors for understanding health. Physical inactivity and poor diet are major risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some cancers.2-6 Inadequate sleep is also related to poor health status, including obesity, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes.2 This brief provides a snapshot of the lifestyle habits of young adults in the U.S. in 2008. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), we examine the following lifestyle behaviors known to be related to health: sleep and sleep problems, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, fast food and sweet beverage intake, and smoking habits. We address the following questions: • How do young adults’ lifestyle behaviors compare to guidelines and recommendations for sleep, diet, physical activity and smoking? • How do young adults’ lifestyle behaviors compare to reported national averages? • How do patterns in these characteristics change by gender, age, race/ethnicity and obesity status?
