This IDEAS, INFORMATION, AND INQUIRY (Triple-I) course is taught by a visual artist, a Spanish teacher, and a geographer. It examines linguistic, geopolitical, and socio-environmental boundaries to foster an intersectional understanding of identity and belonging in the Americas. Course topics (e.g., migration, justice, and environmental wellbeing) are examined through Spanish language-based films and artwork. Students are asked to respond to films and art with individual and collaborative assignments that involve performance, creative design, and fabrication. The assignments seek to forge connections between the arts, humanities, and sciences. Students will create e-portfolios to feature their creations and the skills gained to a broader audience. Components of the e-portfolios are contained in this collection.

Abstract Tesim:
This scene shows two RAs bursting into the lounge in Hojo and detaining Arturo and his friend for violating quiet hours. It was inspired by the tyrannical governments in some Latin American countries that abuse their power by oppressing, degrading, and enacting violence upon their citizens. The RAs specifically represent the unjust government officials in Guatemala, as depicted in El Norte, and them capturing Arturo and his friend refers to Arturo’s death in El Norte from trying to form a labor union. Both the Arturo in El Norte and the one in our film are punished to an unreasonable extremes.

Abstract Tesim:
From the film El Norte, Rosa and Enrique experience the story of an immigrant in search for a better life and overcoming cultural differences. In our movie one of our scenes is Rosa and Enrique talking about fleeing Guatemala. Enrique says that the Guatemalan army wants them dead. This scene relates to the theme of belonging as Enrique and Rosa are not welcomed in their own country. As a result, they go to the United States, but they also go through hard times as they interact with people who do not make them feel welcomed. They are in a journey to find a place where they belong. This scene was created because it was an important part of the film. Without it we not have known why Rosa and Enrique leave Guatemala. For this scene we added information about the Guatemalan Army from the readings and power points. We basically did a remake of the scene but added more information about the Guatemalan Army.

Abstract Tesim:
Scene three was filmed at El Centro Hispano in Carrboro, it mirrored the Leprosy camp in the movie because often times we try to ignore our own immigrant/latinx community. Since our class has incorporated stories of crossing borders, histories of possession and displacement, and Spanish language, it was important to incorporate an organization that is doing social justice work to mitigate these histories. We incorporated Anzaldua into our film because she talks about border nations not solely existing on official borders. El Centro Hispano functions as a border zone because it helps provide resources to help maintain one’s culture while feeling like they belong here.

Abstract Tesim:
This scene was created in order to incorporate aspects of El Abrazo de la Serpiente, as well as include text/ideas from a reading we did in class. We also created this scene in order to provide the character Kate a reason for staying in the art class she was enrolled in, despite receiving backlash from the other students. This scene is an interpretation of the film El Abrazo de la Serpiente because it consists of one person explaining the culture of an area to another person. Just like Karamakate explains to Evan that they have learned through each other’s differences at the end of the film, Ashwin explains to Kate that her differences are necessary to make the class more inclusive. The term New Mestiza, which is used in this scene, comes from the work of Gloria Anzaldúa, which we read in class. In this scene Ashwin informs Kate that she is like a New Mestiza because she is providing the class with a different perspective.

Abstract Tesim:
In this still from our short film "El Abrazo de los Otros" (a loose retelling of the movie "El Abrazo de la Serpiente"), my character gives a pep talk to Kate's character, who is a pre-med student studying in an art class, where she is made fun of by art students for their perceived differences, and thus does not really want to stay in the class. Kate comes to me talking about how the class has weakened her morale and how she feels that her classmates hate her. I respond by stating how this is due to the differences between her and her classmates. While Kate initially takes this as agreeing that she doesn't belong here, I help her see that her existence in the class helps to contribute to the diversity of viewpoints within it. To bolster my encouragement of her, I also quote the late Gloria Anzaldúa, a famous indigenous writer from Mexico. Specifically, I quote her work "La Mestiza Nueva" - which we read in class - with a line about how differing stories are among the main contributors to beneficial multiculturalism, and how Kate is contributing her own story by staying in the class. This scene was rather difficult to shoot, given that I had to quickly memorize some rather complex sentences and quotes. We solved this problem by me breaking up my dialogue in order for me to have one clip with me saying a line, then the recording would end. I would memorize my next line and the recording would start again, and so on. This scene was important to the project because it is what spurs Kate's character to truly get into the art class, and because it is also where I refer to a person whose works we studied in class.

Abstract Tesim:
Image is of Scene 5 ("Good News") of Group 13's "La División" and Our group (group 13) decided to make an alternate ending to “El Norte.” In the real ending to the movie, Rosa contracts a disease due to rat bites she obtains while crossing into the north. Rosa dies from them, leading to Enrique not taking the job in Chicago so he can take care of her in her final days. In our movie, and specifically in this scene, the nurse gives Rosa good news by informing her that she will recover. Enrique went to Chicago to make money to pay for her treatment but Enrique comes back to Rosa at the end of our movie so that they can be together. We wanted to create a scene like this so we could make a happier ending to their story. Throughout the movie we incorporated different readings, knowledge from class, and information from “El Norte.” The feminist art community from a reading earlier in the semester is depicted in our movie as a place for Rosa to go to and find a sense of belonging. We used the movie “El Norte” as a template to create this alternate ending, and finally, we incorporated the Spanish and theme of belonging we have discussed throughout the year in our movie.

This is a scene when Rosa and Nacha first visits the art community that consists of a large number of women from Latin countries to express and narrate their own stories as they connect each other. As our group twists the ending of the movie, el Norte, we make Enrique to leave Rosa for work to pay her treatment and Rosa recovers physically and emotionally. We decided to put this scene to introduce how Rosa and Nacha can share their stories through their unique arts and make connection one another to feel a scene of belonging in the art community.

Abstract Tesim:
We created a scene where protestors blocked Paola’s way to relate to the campus of UNC, but to also relate to some of the struggles that Enrique and Rosa had in El Norte whilst coming to the United States. We incorporated two class readings in the protest that stood out to the group as well. I thought that the forced sterilization of women in Perú and the Brazil Black Women movement were two important topics that, were we actually real protestors, would be relevant and important information that needed to be shared. Filming this scene was uncomfortable and if I were a real protestor, I would want people to listen to my message.

Abstract Tesim:
Data curators have encouraged researchers to share their study data with repositories because new knowledge often comes from the secondary analysis of verifiable data sets. Data sets that are shared with repositories are also protected from loss and technological obsolescence, so their content may be fully exploited over time. However, many members of the traumatic brain injury (TBI) research community are not convinced that data sharing is good policy. This exploratory study seeks to identify the reasons why these scientists are or are not in favor of sharing study data with repositories. This study also seeks to identify which of the prevailing reasons in favor of sharing data these scientists are aware of and if they agree with them. In conclusion, this study suggests more phenomena that may be worth examining: the costs associated with sharing TBI study data, the data submission requirements of repositories, and the reuse of shared TBI study data.
