IDST 190-007: Experiencing Latin America: Bodies, Belonging Nature Fall 2019

This IDEAS, INFORMATION, AND INQUIRY (Triple-I) course is taught by a visual artist, a Spanish teacher, and a geographer. It examines linguistic, geopolitical, and socio-environmental boundaries to foster an intersectional understanding of identity and belonging in the Americas. Course topics (e.g., migration, justice, and environmental wellbeing) are examined through Spanish language-based films and artwork. Students are asked to respond to films and art with individual and collaborative assignments that involve performance, creative design, and fabrication. The assignments seek to forge connections between the arts, humanities, and sciences. Students will create e-portfolios to feature their creations and the skills gained to a broader audience. Components of the e-portfolios are contained in this collection.

Abstract Tesim:
Movie project: Las Esporas de Salvación Scene:Un Salón de Hinton James The opening scene of our project is an interpretation of the scene in “El Norte” where Arturo is killed by Guatemalan soldiers. We decided to make this our opening scene because this was a very powerful event which spurs the rest of the movie. Enrique was traumatized by what he saw happen to his father (in the original movie and our own), and this leads him to go search for a better life. Arturo as speaking about issues about living in Guatemala, so we adapted that to discussing problems about living on campus. We also included information from the reading “Borderlands” in their discussion. I really enjoyed this project because it allowed us to think critically on the issues plaguing Central America and how we can find common ground with the people struggling.

Abstract Tesim:
“Meeting el coyote” in Museo del Sur movie created by Group 12. I chose this scene because it shows a real event that many immigrants encounter when crossing borders and highlights the great danger it can cause. Many immigrants chose to pay a “coyote” a person who helps people cross the border through many different ways and paths, instead of risking crossing by themselves and being caught by ICE. This is a new interpretation because instead of showcasing a dangerous and deadly crossing, we only used a smuggled passport and minimum risk journey. We incorporated knowledge learning from class about how other groups crossed borders to find better conditions for themselves and their families. We based most of the entirety of our movie, to follow along with the incidents that happened in “El Norte”, but added our own version.

El Museo del Sur The scene I will be writing the blurb on is the scene where Rosa is speaking with her brother about her dreams of competing in the worldwide art competition, but that she must be a U.S. citizen. This scene would be titled, “Mi Sueño Artistico”. This scene was created to give an initial twist to the plot of El Norte. The scene gives a new interpretation of the film ​El Norte. Enrique and Rosa have a different motive to leave their home, Guatemala. The motive no longer is violence, but an artistical dream. Knowlege from the class was incorporated as Rosa describes the obstacles that keep her from pursuing her artistical dream. The class and the film were able to help form the scene as we learned about other situations like Rosa’s.

Abstract Tesim:
We chose to film this scene to show the journey of Rosa and Enrique on the bus in Mexico. This is a vital part of the movie, and shows the gruesome journey that they have to go through as immigrants, and speaks to a larger narrative regarding the hardships of having to find a new home. We adapted the scene to the environment that we had, creating the bus illusion using the benches as seats, along with side effects and a driver. Our group was group 16 and it was called “The Bus Scene” from the class movie El Norte.
