This IDEAS, INFORMATION, AND INQUIRY (Triple-I) course is taught by a visual artist, a Spanish teacher, and a geographer. It examines linguistic, geopolitical, and socio-environmental boundaries to foster an intersectional understanding of identity and belonging in the Americas. Course topics (e.g., migration, justice, and environmental wellbeing) are examined through Spanish language-based films and artwork. Students are asked to respond to films and art with individual and collaborative assignments that involve performance, creative design, and fabrication. The assignments seek to forge connections between the arts, humanities, and sciences. Students will create e-portfolios to feature their creations and the skills gained to a broader audience. Components of the e-portfolios are contained in this collection.

"Each student will select ONE scene from the group movie to write a short blurb (100 words). Your blurb should answer the following questions: What prompted you to create this scene? How is this scene a new interpretation of the original scene in the film, or of the story featured in the film? How did you incorporate and adapt knowledge from class, readings, and films to create the movie? Along with the picture of the scene, the blurb should include a title to the scene and the title of the group movie."

Abstract Tesim:
When I was working on my embroidery project, I came across a website that plotted all of Ernesto and Alberto’s journey. It explained that towards the end of their journey, Ernesto ended up in Miami and had to work as a server to save money up to continue his flight back home. We decided to incorporate that in our film when we did the scene in the restaurant with a sad customer. The only difference was that we included Alberto in Ernesto’s trip back to Miami. We incorporated our knowledge of the fact that Ernesto was against capitalism and decided to focus on that throughout our film. We emphasized it when the customer was complaining about not having enough money and when the protesters were outside complaining about the United Fruit Company. We wanted to make those the factors that pushed Ernesto towards his communist beliefs. Movie Title: Un Camino Diferente Scene Title: Ernesto y Cliente triste

Abstract Tesim:
Scene Title: Analysis of Other People’s Prejudice. I think that the word prejudice perfectly describes the attitude that the other students had towards the premed student. This was a theme throughout the movie El Abrazo De La Serpiente. The ethnographer and botanist who came to the Columbian Amazon had a preconceived idea of what these people were like and they often times treated their way of doing things as “wrong” although they were just different. We wanted to create this scene in order to show the confrontation between two different ways of thinking. I think that alternate ways of thinking and understanding other points of view have been an important theme of this class and we wanted to verbalize this in our film.

Abstract Tesim:
Scene: Che’s Brindis de Cumpleaños We created this scene because it helped tie together everything in our film from the relationship between Che and his parents, patients, and friends and it showed how it affected Che. It also showed the audience the serious side of Che that wasn’t shown as much in our film. This scene is a new interpretation of the original film Diarios de Motocicleta in that we had Che talking to an audience in the pit, instead of at the a dinner like he had in the original film. To make this film, we incorporated and adapted knowledge from the class reading “So we understand each other”.

In this scene we wanted to sort of highlight and make a comparison with Los Diarios de Motocicleta particularly the scene where Ernesto and Alberto decide to help the leper colony. In this scene we are discussing how the water crisis is a bigger issue than we imagined, and we will take steps to address this problem. We picked the topic of the water crisis after watching a video in class about how obtaining clean water for everyday use is very difficult in El Salvador.

Abstract Tesim:
Movie: Diarios De Bicicleta Scene: Video rápido de los cuatro amigos caminando hacia Koury. Temoor y Aleenih están en la cancha de volleyball We created this scene to illustrate the commonality between students not having enough time to complete their homework, either due to sports practice, work related responsibilities, or other reasons. This scene is like various scenes in The Motorcycle Diaries, notably when Che is talking to other South American people and hearing about their struggles. Ultimately, he realizes that everyone has more much more in common than once realized, and we wanted to mimic that theme through the perspective of a student. We incorporated knowledge from Che’s works, The Motorcycle Diaries and PPT’s by showing similar themes and using small details (like the ball) to tie it all together.

Abstract Tesim:
The inspiration behind this scene was to remind viewers what Enrique was dealing with when he first came to America. With our film being centered around Enrique finding happiness, we thought it would be good to have Enrique run into someone in a similar situation then what he had been in. Our scene is a new interpretation of the film, because the film leaves the audience assuming that Enrique was left alone and with no job, since he lost his chance. We put a spin on the ending and gave him a successful life in the end. In this particular scene, we incorporated the book La Fronterra by having Enrique give it to Roberto, as the book talks about problems both of them deal with, and Roberto uses it as an inspiration with his new life in America.
