IDST 190-007: Experiencing Latin America: Bodies, Belonging Nature Fall 2019

This IDEAS, INFORMATION, AND INQUIRY (Triple-I) course is taught by a visual artist, a Spanish teacher, and a geographer. It examines linguistic, geopolitical, and socio-environmental boundaries to foster an intersectional understanding of identity and belonging in the Americas. Students are asked to respond to films and art with individual and collaborative assignments that involve performance, creative design, and fabrication. The assignments seek to forge connections between the arts, humanities, and sciences. Students will create e-portfolios to feature their creations and the skills gained to a broader audience. Components of the e-portfolios are contained in this collection.

Abstract Tesim:
We were prompted to create the first scene because we wanted to explain how Chelsea thought of the idea to go on the Bicycle Diaries. We also wanted to incorporate Che’s writings because we needed to include this for the rubric, which we did by having Chelsea read it out to Alberta because she was enjoying Che’s points and felt it applied to UNC Chapel Hill. This is a slightly new interpretation of the film: we kept the bones of the story but adapted it to reference UNC Chapel Hill. This scene is representative of when Che and Alberto decided to go on their voyage across Latin America.

Abstract Tesim:
Our group’s film, Éxito en El Norte, is a sequel of the movie El Norte. It follows the protagonist, Enrique, in his efforts to create a life for himself in Chicago after relocating for a job opportunity. Because our movie was based on El Norte, the theme of finding and making a place was extremely relevant. Out of all of the scenes, we felt that the final scene was most representative of our themes of community and finding a place. The final scene directly relates to the plot of the original El Norte because it depicts Enrique supporting a newly-arrived immigrant from South America. The immigrant, named Roberto, receives Enrique’s advice and, in doing so, is given La Frontera, by Gloria Anzaldúa. This scene is an interpretation of the general message of El Norte, as it shows how survival of immigrants is dependent on those willing to help them as well as on extreme bravery and courage. This scene took inspiration from The New Mestiza Nation and La Frontera, both by Gloria Anzaldúa, as well as from the various lectures in class on bodies, place, and the meaning of belonging. From these sources, we created a scene we felt was most representative of our message: that a future is possible for immigrants in America, and that belonging can be created with compassion and community.

Abstract Tesim:
This scene spoke to me the most when I thought about my group's film making process. This scene is very important because it was the first hardship that Enrique and Arturo came through on their journey to the south. While it was not evident at first, Enrique and Arturo are going to a local Fraternity Party, a college party group known for discrimination. Upon getting there, they are told that they do not fit the category that is being looked for and that they need to leave because they also weren’t on the list. Normal college parties let anyone in but Frat Parties are known for discriminating upon their students. This scene was a new interpretation of the movie “El Norte” because, while it closely resembles how EL Salvadorians were not liked in the movie, it used the discrimination in another way, hence the college party. We used the film as a resemblance to the movie, but created our own sequence of events. This scene relates to the readings we have done because so many people were discriminated upon in our readings such as the National Black Women’s March, the Bracero program, etc.
