Abstract
  • Three weeks after, George Washington laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., another cornerstone was laid in Chapel Hill, N.C. - that of public higher education in the United States. On Oct. 12, 1793, the cornerstone of Old East, the nation's first state university building, was laid on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Now, in 1993, UNC-Chapel Hill celebrates 200 years of educational excellence and public service. The Bicentennial Observance begins on Oct. 12, 1993 (University Day), and concludes May 15, 1994 (Commencement). The official theme is "First in the Nation."
