- Across the border, in Rwanda, commemoration is official. It has buildings and plaques; it has clean lines; it has dates; it has lists. Across the border, in Rwanda, there are annual festivals, state-sanctioned repertoires. Manifestos of mourning. Across the border, in Rwanda, commemoration is a sanctuary, a visceral transgenerational vow, an intimate and unyielding act. I stand in solidarity with the many extraordinary Rwandese who extract from history a vigilant resilience. Daily.
