Transforming Undergraduate Research Experiences: A Five-Year Impact Study of a Quality Enhancement Plan at a Large Public University

This study examines the implementation and five-year impact of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focused on transforming undergraduate research experiences at a large public university. The QEP aimed to broaden student access to research experiences through four initiatives: Integrated Curricula, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), Makerspace Integration, and Research Exposure Opportunities. Impact was assessed across three key domains: student learning outcomes, development of research skills, and interdisciplinary engagement. Assessment methods included pre- and post-course content knowledge tests, research skill surveys, project ownership surveys, and participation data. Results demonstrated significant gains in students’ disciplinary content knowledge, research self-efficacy, and project ownership. Findings highlight the potential for embedded, course-based models to expand access to high-impact educational experiences and foster sustained research engagement for all students.
