Abstract
  • This century old building on Queen St, the historical divide between predominantly white, downtown New Bern and the largely African American communities of Dryborough and Duffyfield (amongst others). This building stands as a reminder of this community’s proud past, its troubled present and its bright future. A thriving community on the edge of New Bern throughout much of the 19th Century, a great fire decimated many of the homes and businesses throughout Dryborough and the greater Duffyfield neighborhoods in 1922, leaving thousands homeless. The mural seen on the side of this building, created by Dominican Republic artists in a joint venture with Craven Community College and the City of New Bern in 2012, depicts the Great Fire and the Phoenix rising from its ashes. Just as the Phoenix rose, so to did this community.
