Abstract
  • Objective: To determine if there are any changes in range of motion and neural properties in the triceps surae muscle group following the administration of either or both Graston Technique and Self-Myofasical Release. Design: Counterbalanced Crossover Study Design Setting: Young, relatively healthy recreationally active patiens Patients: Twenty participants (10 male and 10 female) between the ages of 18-25 Interventions: Control measure, Graston Technique instrument assisted soft tissue massage, Self-Myofascial Release with a foam roller. Main Outcome Measures: Likert Scale survey data, dorsiflexion range of motion, muscle stiffness of the triceps surae, reflex EMG amplitude and reflex force of the triceps surae. Results: Significant difference exists between intervention (either treatment) and control groups on dorsiflexion range of motion measures but not on any neural measures taken in this study. Additionally, patients feel that Graston Technique is more effect in reducing pain and tightness than either SMR or the control measure. Conclusions: Further research is necessary to determine the immediate effects of both of these treatments but preliminary research suggests that there may be significant crossover in their uses in an active population.
