Impact of obesity on performance fatigability in women

Abstract
  • Obesity prevalence is increasing, resulting in numerous health consequences, potentially including performance fatigability. However, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Due to the gap in literature on female physiology, the purpose of this study was to examine previously speculated mechanisms influencing performance fatigability in normal weight (NW) and obese (OB) women. Thirty-three women (18-30yrs) were categorized into age and physical activity matched groups: NW (n=15, %BF=22.4±7.1%) and OB (n=18, %BF=43.4±6.2%). After a body composition assessment, blood flow, muscle architecture, percent voluntary activation and potentiated twitch properties were examined prior to and after a leg extensor isotonic fatiguing task. Performance fatigability and changes in potentiated twitch properties were similar between groups. However, NW women experienced a greater reduction in %VA (-12.3±12.9%; P=0.002) and increased blood flow response to exercise (99.7±67.2%; P=0.028). Significant predictors of fatigability differed between NW (potentiated twitch torque and %VA) and OB (blood flow and potentiated twitch torque) women.
