Abstract
  • In everyday conversations speakers can experience production difficulty. New referents in the discourse tend to be more difficult to produce compared to old referents. Also, unfamiliar referents tend to be more difficult compared to familiar ones. Traditionally the effects of production difficulty have been studied through disfluencies. In this thesis I provide evidence that production difficulty can also lead to prosodic modulation. Moreover, I demonstrate that the prosodic modulation resulting from production difficulty is acoustically similar to acoustic prominence. I therefore explore the relationship between prosodic modulation due to production difficulty and acoustic prominence due to accenting.
