Signal Analysis of the M5.1 Sparta Aftershock Sequence to Identify Clustered Waveforms and Changes in Seismic Velocity Associated with the Little River Fault

- Following the M5.1 earthquake that occurred on August 9, 2020 in historically aseismic Sparta, 786 aftershocks were recorded over six days, 86 of which were located and further studied. Prior to location, a shallow one-dimensional velocity model describing the Sparta region was derived from a scheduled quarry blast by utilizing linear regression methods. These 86 aftershocks were located using an iterative Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, where 67 more events were identified than USGS during this time, and by comparing the seismic signals to other events across all stations, 22% of located aftershocks exhibited clustered waveforms, or repeat earthquakes. Comparing the distribution of aftershock and clustered event locations to the fault scarp’s vertical displacement, areas with larger displacements did not correspond to many notable events or large groupings within the distribution. While a couple of stations showed similar patterns in travel time residuals, slowness associated with the fault plane was inconclusive.
