- Abstract
- Honor was the core motivating factor for Colombians who participated in the Thousand Days’ War. It transcended racialized, gendered, and class-based societal boundaries. But these boundaries nevertheless determined how different elements of Colombian society at the turn of the twentieth century perceived honor. They also determined how these elements of Colombian society perceived justice and what constituted a reparation of injured or affronted honor. My analysis of honor in Colombian society during the Thousand Days’ War considers the perspectives of the generals, the clergy, and the soldiers. Their writings, publications, and memories reveal how their wartime activities revealed intense anxieties over their reputation and identity in their communities. They also reveal what constituted justice in their minds, and the difficulties inherent in trying to establish a satisfactory framework for the cessation of hostilities.
