Abstract
  • LEGEND is an international collaboration searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge76 utilizing well-understood germanium detector technology. To maximize the sensitivity of germanium-based neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, the ability to effectively differentiate single-site events from multi-site events through pulse shape discrimination is essential. This honors thesis describes an ongoing experimental process to characterize a proposed novel high purity germanium detector geometry called the Ring-Contact (RC) detector, which should have excellent pulse shape discrimination capabilities. The Prototyping and Testing Cryostat (PTC) in Room 002 of Phillips Hall has been readied. A string of two Broad Energy Germanium detectors was made and installed into the PTC; background energy spectra were then measured. An RC detector has been recently produced at Texas A&M University to be tested and characterized at UNC-Chapel Hill. The PTC is prepared to measure the energy spectra of this novel detector. The RC detector will then be characterized and assessed for possible use in the upcoming LEGEND-1000 experiment.
