Abstract
  • When it came time to pick a topic for my Global Studies Honors Thesis, I immediately knew that I wanted to study Global Brigades. I had spent essentially my whole undergraduate career volunteering for the organization, but I had a lot of ethical questions on how it compared to the concept of “voluntourism” and to other organizations that are in the same field. Through my classes and interactions with my fellow students, I was aware of the criticisms of “voluntourism” that involved the white savior complex, Western colonialism, unskilled volunteers, etc. So my goal was to see how Global Brigades measured up under this criticism broadly.
