Abstract
  • Labor force participation plummeted upon the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and has only partially recovered since. Meanwhile, K-12 schools across the United States were shut down in March 2020 and only began to reopen starting that fall. It is unclear whether these reopenings helped bring parents back to the labor force once they no longer had to look after their children at home, due to scant literature on the topic. Using administrative school reopenings data from the COVID-19 School Data Hub for the 2020-21 academic year merged with Current Population Survey labor data at the county level, I estimate positive and disproportionate effects of reopenings on the labor outcomes of women with children ages 5 to 14 and, to a lesser extent, men with children ages 5 to 10.
