DIVERSITY IN DIETETICS: WHY DOES IT MATTER?

- Abstract
- The demographics of the nutrition and dietetics remains largely monolithic despite recognition of the need to increase diversity in the field and dedicated efforts to do so. The lack of diversity amongst healthcare practitioners has long been an issue, and within the dietetics profession is no different. However, it could be argued that this issue is more pronounced within the dietetics profession. Why is this problematic? One reason is related to the populations served by dietitians. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by nutritionally-related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease and are often also at increased nutritional risk. Additionally, the rapidly changing demographic profile that is taking place within the nation is only going to make the current issue with the lack of diversity a larger one if it continues at its current rate. However, diversification of the workforce is one way to address these health disparities and improve the quality of care and health of the general population. The present paper explores the importance of diversifying the field of nutrition and dietetics and examines the efforts that have been taken to address this issue.
