- Abstract
- Using the MARKAL linear programming energy systems optimization model and US EPA Nine-Region database, the future climate change influence on US heating and cooling energy demands for the SRES A2 scenario is quantified. Changes in energy demands are estimated using population-weighted HDD and CDD. Cooling demands in 2050 for the residential and commercial sectors increase by 32.53 and 33.53% respectively, while heating demands decrease by 12.93 and 14.14%, causing national energy demands to increase by 375 PJ(0.33%). Climate change increases the 2050 residential and commercial cooling the most where CDD increase most (Pacific, East North Central and West North Central regions), and decrease space heating the most where HDD decrease most (South Atlantic, West South Central and East South Central regions). Climate change causes 2050 national residential and commercial direct and indirect emissions to increase for CO2, NOx and SO2, while residential PM10 emissions decrease and commercial PM10 increase.
