  • 3This is a still from the video Same Joke, Different Shirts. It is the first in the Same Joke series. I wanted to make works about variation in telling jokes. The series focuses on timing in stand-up comedy, specifically repetition. In musical performance the audience expects to hear bands perform their hits, while in standup audiences often complain if they have heard a comic tell the same joke more than once. To me this is fascinating, because it ignores the possibility of variation in timing, voice, gesture, phrasing, etc. Here an absurd joke is repeated by filming it on consecutive days. In this iteration the separation of time in between shoots allows for variation in the recitation of the joke.
