Abstract
  • Nearly half of the seven billion people on earth live within 60 miles of an ocean. Land-based cities, and their ever-growing populations, rely on the sea for transportation, food, livelihoods, recreation and a place for refuse. This great, untamed resource remains all but invisible in sustainable urbanism discussion and practice. This oversight is the topic of Timothy Beatley’s 2014 book, Blue Urbanism: Exploring Connections between Cities and Oceans. Beatley, currently the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, has written extensively on green urbanism, but by his own admission, he had overlooked the topic of oceans until his 2011 essay on blue urbanism in Places. While few of the individual ideas presented in his recent book are truly new, Blue Urbanism provides a compelling case for packaging together policies and behaviors that promote the health of ocean systems into a cohesive philosophy.
