Abstract

Recently, the use of expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) as a treatment for oropharyngeal dysphagia in both the inpatient and outpatient settings has burgeoned. This treatment has shown to improve maximal expiratory pressure and cough strength, which can protect the airway by expelling penetrated materials from the laryngeal vestibule (Palmer et al. 2018; Anand et al. 2012). However, there is limited reliable evidence on whether these outcomes translate to a safer swallow and improved functional, swallowing-related outcomes in patients with dysphagia. Regarding specific sub-populations of adults with dysphagia, there are limited numbers of articles and studies to support its use. The current research utilized a formal systematic review to evaluate published research on the functional outcomes of the Mendelsohn maneuver, a traditional means of dysphagia therapy, and juxtapose these outcomes with those of EMST in adults with oropharyngeal dysphagia.
