Abstract
  • Preterm infants’ feeding outcomes are often influenced by various feeding strategies. In previous years, the primary focus of feeding in the NICU was influenced by time and volume. This left little room for the preterm infant to develop a regulated suck swallow breathe pattern, thus increasing demand on the preterm infant to regulate and consequently extending length of stay (Bingham, 2009). More recently, healthcare professionals have shifted from volume driven to cue based feeding (Horner, 2014 & Gelfer , 2015). Multidisciplinary professional and caregiver collaboration in the NICU can promote efficacy for these strategies and support carryover postdischarge (Wellington, 2015). Caregivers of preterm infants with complex feeding needs may feel increased anxiety when discharged from the hospital. This systematic review aimed to gather current strategies being used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which foster parent engagement, enhancement of feeding experiences, and positive feeding related outcomes for infants. The literature suggests that intervention in neonatal settings have more beneficial outcomes when caregivers are included in the intervention process.
