Abstract
  • Parent coaching (or training) is commonly incorporated into early intervention services to support young children’s speech and language development ( Multhauf, Hasselhorn, Pietz, 2015 Hampton, Kaiser, Roberts, 2017 Landa, Holman, O’Neill, Stuart, 2011 Several studies have recognized that training caregivers to provide intervention in the child’s natural environment requires less resources and may be more affordable than traditional interventions ( Smith, Zwaigenbaum, Bryson, 2017 In comparison to the larger subset of research on early intervention parent coaching, there have been fewer studies that considered children’s long term language outcomes, and these investigations often experienced high attrition rates, difficulty separating parent mediated interventions from other interventions the children were receiving, or lacked conclusive findings on the effectiveness of parent coaching by itself ( Multhauf, Hasselhorn, Pietz, 2015 Gilkerson, Richards, Topping, 2017 Kasari et al 2014 The current systematic review examined research on early intervention parent coaching related to children’s language outcomes We investigated the amount of training that parents received and whether children experienced language gains in response to a supportive language environment and increased responsiveness from parents.
