Abstract
  • The prevalence of tongue tie in the US is widely unknown, ranging anywhere from 4-10% (Segal, Stephenson, Dawes, & Feldman, 2007). Tongue tie affects the security of the baby’s latch, causing nipple damage and pain for the mothers, as well as resulting in insufficient breastmilk intake (Edmunds, Miles, & Fulbrook, 2011). Frenotomy, also known as tongue tie division, or a lingual frenulum surgery, is often controversial. There is a lack of standardized assessment tools used to evaluate tongue tie in infants, and lack of studies evaluating this surgery with a control population. Thus, it is important to systematically review the outcomes of frenotomy on infants with feeding disorders characterized by difficulty breastfeeding.
