Abstract
  • In 2016, the Research unit of the University of Michigan Library set out to gain a more complete understanding of the work performed by its service expert staff. Service experts were defined as public services professionals who provide expertise or services to campus. Among these service experts are subject specialist liaison librarians, and functional expert data and visualization librarians, etc. In partnership with Bridgeport Consulting LLC of Ann Arbor, Michigan, this functional analysis data collection tool was developed and distributed to service expert staff in July, 2016. Research unit managers created an exhaustive list of “functions,” or activities, that a service expert might perform in the course of a day’s work. An Excel spreadsheet (the “Tool”) was created from this list, which allowed each service expert to enter an approximation of his or her annual effort spent on each individual function.
