  • Objectives: To build collaborative relationships between the Health Sciences Library, and local community colleges. Setting/Participants: The Health Science Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) formed partnerships with a librarian and occupational therapy professor at Durham Technical Community College, and a librarian at Central Carolina Community College. Brief Description: We received two outreach express awards from the National Library of Medicine to reach out to librarians, students, faculty, and staff at community colleges because of the important role they play in the training and development of the allied health professions. A plan was developed in response to the health information needs identified in survey results from the faculty and students. Based on results indicating that 86% of students reported that they learn better with hands-on activities and tutorials, we developed two interactive training modules. The first module was on consumer health resources for patient education for nursing students, and the second module was on research skills for occupational therapy students. The lessons learned from this project will be helpful for libraries that want to partner with and reach out to community colleges. Results/Outcome: The partnership formed between the Health Science Library at UNC and Durham Technical Community College and Central Carolina Community College allowed us to create interactive training modules that matched the needs and resources of both partners and their users. Evaluation Method: We did a pre-module survey and post-module survey of the students and faculty at each community college to determine their information needs, and the impact of the training modules.
