Subject: Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr

We are grateful for the suggestion to rename Airport Road in the name of Martin Luther King, Jr because it reminds of of a useful means to honor him, but we feel that this is not an appropriate way to recognize this great leader.

We want to add our support to those who prefer to honor Dr. King and the civil rights struggle by naming a public school for him. East Chapel Hill High School would be an excellent choice. Perhaps an even better alternative would be the third high school now being planned.

Our public schools represent a fundamental community institution and offer a far more fitting opportunity to show our respect for Dr. King and his mission.

Thanks for your consideration of this proposal,

Ray and Pat Carpenter
