- Abstract
- Scientific data across the globe are at-risk of being lost forever due to format obsolescence, improper storage conditions, and lack of metadata. The Data-At-Risk Inventory was created to assess the scope of this growing problem. It is important to consider the needs and attitudes of scientists in developing the Inventory. This paper reports on a focus group study with 14 participants. The primary goal of the study is to better understand what scientists think about endangered data and data reuse. The results suggest that scientists understand the importance of endangered data and data reuse, but are reluctant to share data or contribute to the Inventory unless it has a direct impact on their careers. These results will help inform the Data-At-Risk efforts going forward, aid in Inventory development, and add to the knowledge base on data sharing/reuse.
