Abstract
  • The research on on improving the accessibility of descriptive records for cultural objects is extensive. Such studies, ranging from indexing and subject access to experiments with social tagging, have historically focused primarily on art objects to the neglect of other cultural objects, however. Utilizing the Charles Kuralt Learning Center, a collection of historical objects at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, this study explores the needs of a specific user group-researchers with relevant subject knowledge-when using descriptive object records for research. Three major themes emerged during the data analysis process: the contextualization of objects; the relationships between object records; and an interest in confirmation, validation, and authenticity.
