- Abstract
- A statistical model was used to investigate the relation between compliance with an occupational exposure limit (OEL) for chronic or delayed toxicants, and risk of disease as measured by the probability that an individual's long-term mean exposure concentration exceeds the OEL. The model, which assumes the relevant distributions to be lognormal, relates compliance to risk solely by the total variance and its partitioning into within-worker and between-worker variance components. A database of approximately 5000 chemical exposures has been used to validate the model. When the assumptions of the model are met, it is demonstrated that regulatory compliance with an OEL is not always protective of workers' health. On the basis of these results, when dealing with chronic toxicants, a recommendation is made to adopt testing procedures which focus on a randomly selected worker's long-term mean exposure.
