Abstract
  • This paper examines efforts linking local agriculture to school feeding programs (SFPs) in the U.S. and Brazil and uses the results to suggest best practices and potential adaptations. The PubMed database was searched using the terms "USDA Farm to School", "local agriculture and school feeding" and "Brazil school feeding". USDA and WFP websites were searched for documents related to school feeding in the US and Brazil. The references cited in these documents provided further resources. Investigation revealed that the U.S. and Brazil have increased local agricultural presence in SFPs through legislative, fiscal, and technical support. However, both countries could benefit from increased communication and collaboration between all parties and improved infrastructure to procure and transport goods. Process and outcome evaluations are also needed to provide evidence that these programs are achieving their goals, which would increase political and popular support and would serve as tools for other countries trying to implement similar programs.
