Learning Objective: • Describe the need for continuing education (CE) for community pharmacists regarding available smoking cessation therapy and appropriate counseling for those ready to quit. Background: • Approximately 1 in 5 adults smokes ✦In 2010 19.3% of adults smoked which declined from 20.9% in 2005 • Nicotine dependence is the most common form of chemical dependence in the US • It is difficult to quit smoking and typically requires multiple attempts • Almost 70% of current smokers want to quit completely ✦ Only about 40% of smokers will make an attempt. Purpose: • Determine the need for continuing education of pharmacists on available over-­the-­counter(OTC) and prescription nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products and how to appropriately counsel a patient who is ready to quit smoking.
