- Abstract
- Documenting the American South (DAS) is a digital library project of the Academic Affairs Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The project creates electronic texts marked up in the Text Encoding Initiative Document Type Definition of Standard Generalized Markup Language (TEI SGML). Unfortunately, TEI SGML documents are not viewable by most Web users. As a result, DAS must maintain a large number of HTML files to provide access to the materials. This paper outlines DAS's current system for the creation and maintenance of HTML pages, and describes a system that implements Web database technology to automate the process. The system uses PHP to interface with a MySQL database. The scripts insert information into the database and automatically generate many of the HTML pages that are currently written by hand. The new system will save time and reduce the occurrence of errors in the project's HTML pages.
