An Examination of the Causal Relationship between Soft Drink Consumption and Kidney Disease with Policy Suggestions

- Abstract
- Objectives: To examine whether a relationship between soft drink consumption and kidney disease could be disproven. Data Sources: The data sources were PubMed and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature electronic databases and spot searches of journals not included in those databases. Methods: Study texts and abstracts were reviewed for applicability and those which provided data were included. In addition, journal and informational articles regarding general kidney health and current strategies to combat kidney disease were referenced. Results: Based on the reviews, a causal relationship has been shown between the consumption of both regular soft drinks and diet soft drinks with an increase in kidney disease as well as an increase in kidney disease risk factors such as uric acid production, diabetes, and obesity. Conclusions: It was concluded that a relationship between soft drink consumption and kidney disease could not be disproven.
