Emergency Department Diagnoses in Eastern North Carolina Associated with Smoke Exposure from the 2011 Pains Bay Wildfire

- Abstract
- A 2011 peat wildfire near Pains Bay,North Carolina (NC) caused widespread and recurrent population exposure to smoke. In 2008 smoke from a wildfire in the same region was associated with increased cardiopulmonary outcomes in eastern NC. We conducted a population-based epidemiologic investigation of associations between county-level fine particulate matter (PM[25])concentrations modeled by HYSPLIT and emergency department diagnoses collected through syndromic surveillance in 28 counties between May 5 and June 18, 2011. We estimated changes in the cumulative relative risk of ED diagnoses over 0-2 lagged days of smoke exposure using a quasi-Poisson regression model adjusted for weather, weekends and county-level poverty. Cumulative relative risk associated with a 1Oμg/m^3 increase in 24-hr. PM[25] was significantly elevated in adults for upper respiratory infections [1.13(1.05-1.22)], cardiopulmonary symptoms [1.06(1.00-1.13)], hypertension [1.05(1.00-1.09)]and cardiac diagnoses [1.06(1.00-1.13)].
