Abstract
  • This study describes the early period of North Carolina history which culminated in the birth of the North Carolina State Library. This historical research represents a perspective on early interest in the creation and development of state libraries, North Carolina in particular. Research materials were accessed through the use of the North Carolina State Library, the North Carolina State Capitol, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill general collections. The study was limited to early colonial interest in collecting literature, the birth of the North Carolina State Library, and its conjunction with the North Carolina Library organizations which produced the present-day library system.
