Abstract
  • 1 in 3 American women will obtain an abortion before turning 45. Abortion is one of the safest surgical procedures in the US. The passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973 has contributed to increased safety of the procedure. Since that time, the US political and societal landscape has evolved surrounding abortion. Each state has implemented its own policies, some expanding and some restricting, surrounding abortion. This presentation explores the history of abortion in the U.S. and more closely examines abortion history and policies in two politically different states: North Carolina and Massachusetts. This presentation is intended to serve as an addition to material covered in Foundations course that is part of the UNC Department of Maternal and Child Health.
