Survival and Reproduction Differences in Populations of Ceriodaphnia dubia Following Exposure to Whole Wastewater Effluent: An Intra- and Interlaboratory Study

- Abstract
- The effect of populationon the outcome of chronicbioassays, specifically the North Carolina Ceriodaphnia Mini-Chronic Pass/Fail Toxicity Test, was investigated. The goal of the investigation was to determine whether or not different populations (or clones) of C. dubia were a significant factor accounting for variability in the outcome of chronic bioassays, holding all other aspects of the test (diet and dilution water) constant. Comparisons were made of the survival and reproduction within and between three C. dubia populations cultured in whole wastewater effluent, diluted mineral water (DMW), and whole wastewater effluent spiked with copper. Each population of C. dubia satisfied the minimum survival and reproduction standards of the North Carolina Mini-Chronic Toxicity Test in each culture water, except where the copper concentration was >100 μg/L. Populations 1 and 2 exhibited the least amount of intralaboratory and interlaboratory variability compared to Population 3. The results suggest that the selection of a particular laboratory population of C. dubia can influence the outcome of chronic bioassays.
