Abstract
  • Librarians at the Health Sciences Library and physicians in the university’s Department of Family Medicine are collaborating to enhance the value and impact of Your Health Radio, a consumer health radio show airing locally. Goals for this collaboration were to make the show’s website more interactive and the content better available and more discoverable, using a tool or platform that would not require IT staff assistance or significant cost. To meet these goals, librarians evaluated various options and recommended using the WordPress. com platform to create a blog/website and the vocabulary from MedlinePlus to index content. This process involved many activities, including evaluating and recommending WordPress features and assisting with blog design, providing training to include audio recordings in blog posts, and advising on copyright issues for images used on the blog/website. The show’s staff is now able to post recordings of the shows and a variety of other content easily, maintaining the blog/website themselves. In addition to indexing content for the weekly show on an ongoing basis, in a second phase of this collaboration, librarians contribute weekly by providing links to additional consumer health information for topics discussed during the show. Benefits of this project include Your Health Radio reaching a larger audience and the Health Sciences Library receiving recognition for its contributions. Presenters will share about the collaboration through the eyes of one of the show’s hosts via a brief video interview and discuss how they got involved, the process, and the benefits and challenges of this project.
