Abstract
  • This is an evaluation of an educational intervention project conducted by the National Environmental Educational Foundation (NEEF) designed to build health professional capacity to address children's environmental health (and general environmental health) issues. This was accomplished through the integration of identified pediatric/environmental health (P/EH) competencies via a network of children's environmental health Faculty Champions from medical and nursing schools throughout the country. Data were collected by NEEF using a pre-experimental mixed methods approach. Twenty-eight faculty members of schools of medicine and/or nursing at a university academic health centers participated in the Faculty Champion training project. The NEEF Faculty Champions train-the-trainer workshop was highly effective in incorporating P/EH information into the education and practice of medical and nursing professionals with a significant (p= < .0001) improvement in participants' knowledge of P/EH. In addition the Faculty Champions far exceeded the initial goal of training an additional 280 health professionals, reaching a total of 1,517 faculty, practitioners, residents, and nursing and medical students about P/EH topics. This program may serve as a model for integration of P/EH into medical and nursing school curricula.
