The Potential Effect of Cancer on the Birth Outcomes of Female Cancer Survivors

- Abstract
- Objectives: To determine if women who become pregnant after a cancer diagnosis are more likely to have adverse birth outcomes than women who had a pregnancy prior to being diagnosed with cancer. Methods: The study population included 15,662 women who were diagnosed with cancer and had a live birth in North Carolina during the years of 1990-2009. The exposure of interest was one of eleven cancer diagnoses. The outcomes investigated were preterm birth (PTB) and low birthweight (LBW). Logistic regression was run using Stata 11.1. Results: Women who were diagnosed with cancer before a pregnancy were 1.37 times as likely to deliver a PTB infant and 1.36 times as likely to deliver a LBW infant than women who were diagnosed with cancer after a pregnancy. Conclusions: The findings suggest that women in North Carolina who were diagnosed with cancer prior to giving birth had a slightly higher risk of experiencing PTB and LBW deliveries.
