Maidens or Warriors: Women's Roles in Current Young Adult Fantasy Literature

- Abstract
- In American society, media, and literature, gender bias and stereotyping are often the subject for analysis. Fantasy, a genre that has recently enjoyed much popularity, has a history of assigning female characters with roles stereotypical to gender. What remains to be seen is whether women's roles in current young adult fantasy have adapted with the changing times: are roles still gender-biased, or have they become neutral? In this quantitative content analysis, current young adult fantasy novels are to be randomly selected and the female characters will be examined for their roles, both positive or negative. Each book will be analyzed for the stereotypical gender traits found in the Gender Personality Traits as Used in Basal Reading Group Series (Evans & Davies, 2000) inventory. The data will be analyzed for themes within the books separately, and then as a whole.
